A lot of Hindi movies are not permitted to be screened in theatres across India due to political, sexual, and nudity issues. In this article, we will look at the top 13 Hindi movies that were taken from theatres but are still available online through OTT platforms like Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, etc.

1. Fire – YouTube , It is considered as amongst the most controversial hindi movies of all time

When Fire was released, it was hard for it to find theatres in India since some segments of the society are still uncomfortable with the idea of homosexuality (1996).

A lesbian relationship between two sisters-in-law in a Hindu family was the subject of the movie. The actors and directors Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, and Deepa Mehta also received death threats. The movie was also removed from the cinema after receiving multiple complaints after opening. A few years later, in 1999, the film was released without any changes.

That is why it continues to rank among the top 13 Hindi movies that have stirred outrage.

2. Parzania – Hotstar

Parzania by Rahul Dholakia is based on the true story of Azhar Mody, whose 13-year-old son vanished during the riots in Gujarat in 2002. Gujarati theatre owners refused to show the movie despite the censor board’s approval.

It is regarded as one of the most disputed Hindi movies of all time due to its story.

3. Gandu – Netflix

The movie’s director, Qaushiq Mukherjee, also cowrote the script and handled the cinematography. Anubrata Basu, who plays the film’s protagonist and addict rapper, is the focus of the narrative. The film also contains many sensual scenes and coarse language, which at the time caused controversy.

4. Unfreedom – Netflix

Due to its blunt depictions of sexual assault and LGBT concerns, the divisive movie Unfreedom was banned in India. The unconventional subject matter of the movie won praise from critics, but it was thought that Indian viewers might find it to be too “sensitive.” As a result, it is considered as one of the most disputed Hindi movies to date.

5. Angry Indian Goddesses – Netflix

Although the censor board suggested numerous cuts, the filmmaker’s creative freedom was severely restricted. Angry Indian Goddesses was nonetheless prohibited.

6. Water – You tube

The movie Water talks about a widow’s predicament in India in 1938. The movie’s screenplay was written by Anurag Kashyap. The movie also depicts how sexist and ostracizing our culture was while it was ruled by the Brits.

It is the third series in Deepa Mehta’s Elements trilogy, following the releases of “Fire” in 1996 and “Earth” in 1998. This is also considered to be one of the most controversial Hindi movies.

7. Inshallah, Football – YouTube

The movie portrays the tale of a teenage Kashmiri football hopeful whose father was a Hizbul Mujahidin militant. The movie was denied a censorship certificate. Therefore it was not permitted to be screened in theatres.

8. Nayakan – Amazon Prime Video

Kamal Haasan, Saranya Ponvannan, and Livingston feature in Mani Ratnam’s 1987 Indian Tamil-language criminal drama film Nayakan. The movie tells the tale of a Chennai slum dweller who rises to power as a don.

Because of its violence and undertones of lawlessness, Nayakan was banned by the CBFC.

9. LOEV – NETFLIX

Two gay couples, Sahil and Jay, are the subject of the novel Loev. Their chemistry, romance, and falling out are all discussed. Shiv Pandit plays Jay, the movie’s businessman, while Dhruv Ganesh portrays Sahil, who was the actor’s final performance before passing away from tuberculosis.

The film’s screenplay was penned by producer and director Sudhanshu Saria.

10. Black Friday – Hotstar, Netflix

It is one of those Hindi movies that received high appreciation from critics everywhere yet was unable to open in Indian theatres. The movie is based on the 1995 explosions and the subsequent inquiry. It was never released on the big screen, but it can be watched on OTT platforms.

One of the most contentious Hindi films is this one, as per many critics.



11. Kissa Kursi Ka – YouTube

While it was based on the government of Indira Gandhi in India, the political parody Kissa Kursi Ka received criticism.

When the movie was supposed to come out in 1978, when there was an emergency, its release was postponed. All of the film’s reels were seized because Congress had complete control over all media releases at the time.

12. Bandit Queen – Amazon Prime

Based on an adaptation of Mala Sen’s book, the movie is about Phoolan Devi’s life. After a brief while, the movie “Bandit Queen” was taken from theatres. In addition to discussing rape cases involving upper-caste men, the movie featured violence against women.

The film’s main character was played by Seema Biswas. This is also regarded as one of the most divisive Hindi movies.

13. Lipstick Beneath My Burkha – Amazon Prime

After initially being prohibited, the Alankrita Shrivastava-directed movie “Lipstick Beneath My Burkha” is now available on OTT platform. It is regarded as one of the best in Hindi movies. The movie also serves as a superb example of women sharing the stories of other women.

Four ladies embark on a quest for happiness and freedom in the centre of the movie. The lead actors in the film are Aahana Kumar, Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Plabita Borthakur.
