The Ranbir Kapoor-starring Animal movie is the most violent and toxic Bollywood movie to date. Some people think Animal is the best Bollywood movie they’ve seen recently, while others find the story ridiculous.
The film Animal takes everything that was unpleasant between Kabir Singh and Arjun Reddy and amplifies it. It is without a doubt the most sexist and toxic Hindi movie I have ever seen. After a point I wanted to leave the theatre and remove some toxicity out of my head.
The movie is also the most violent. The surprising thing is that it is still remarkably gaining popularity, all because to Ranbir Kapoor’s incredible performance.
Why is it controversial?
The Animal movie is controversial because of its unrestrained violence, celebration of toxic masculinity, and misogynistic overtones. The way the male lead in the movie treats the female characters dehumanizes them and trivializes significant situations.
The popularity of Animal is indicative of a greater trend in Indian cinema, where male characters are portrayed as hyper-violent supreme beings, raising questions about how gender dynamics and conventional ideas of masculinity are portrayed.
These are ten eerie scenes from the Animal movie that viewers considered troubling:
1. Shooting a gun in the bedroom
In the Animal movie, Ranvijay Singh Balbir (Ranbir Kapoor) shoots a gun into the bedroom wall, startling the sleeping children in front of his wife, as if the slap wasn’t enough of an issue for Kabir Singh. After all, the fierce son adds, “It’s a man’s world, Geetanjali (Rashmika); deal with it.”
2. Alpha males can have an extra-material relationship.
Ranbir’s character is depicted lecturing on the virtues of loyalty and how alpha guys are lifelong companions.
In the latter part of the story, however, we witness his character having an extramarital affair with a different lady, which he rationalizes in the eyes of his father’s defense.
3. The big pelvis comment
Using the idea that “poetry was developed by weaker men in an attempt to get back their lost women from the alpha males,” the hero seduces the heroine of the movie.
To entice her back, he used a cheap pick-up line that blatantly objectifies a woman’s body: He said “you can accommodate healthy babies because you have a big pelvis.” A woman’s only function is to bear children, after all.
4. A wife cannot remarry after the husband dies
Ranbir’s character literally tells his wife, “Suno, agar main aaj waapas nahi aaya, to dobara shaadi mat karna,” before facing off against Bobby Deol’s character, Abrar.
In other words, his wife shouldn’t get remarried if he doesn’t return from the fight. But alpha males are allowed to marry thrice or have an extra marital affair.
5. Treating wives as sex slaves
In Animal movie, there is a conflict between two dominant characters and no room for women.
The film ignores Rashmika’s characters’ personal accomplishments and treats all three of Bobby Deol’s wives as nothing more than sex slaves.
6. Making fun of the menstruation cycle
In one scene that is filled with expression, Vijay (Ranbir) gets into a furious dispute with his on-screen wife, Geetanjali, for complaining about her menstruation. Public outrage at Reddy Vanga’s offensive speech has resulted in a pushback against the dialogue.
7. Bringing guns into the school
Another moment that caused controversy shows a teenage Ranbir Kapoor bringing a gun into his sister’s college and confronting the people who had supposedly ragged her. Concerns have been raised by the public’s jubilant reaction to this depiction of a schoolboy carrying a gun in class, with online users questioning if it is appropriate to applaud such a situation.
8. To prove love, shoe licking is essential
A scene that has caused a lot of controversy is Tripti Dimri’s character, Zoya Riaz, played by Ranbir Kapoor, asking her to lick his shoe as a love sign. Online debates have centered around the scene where the actress is asked to show empathy.
9. Depiction of an Alpha male
There are no rules in this world of the Alpha’s except the ones he creates. Gripping alcohol by the gallon, the macho man flexes his toned muscles and slams down anyone who dares to stand in his way. It’s all in a day’s work when someone shoots, slashes, impales, beats, bludgeons, and chops limbs.
The Alpha is not scared to get blood on his hands and has a primitive level of fury. He flaunts his manhood with obscene movements that are full of style and swagger. With their promise of going even further with a planned sequel, movies like Animal depend on shock material by checking off every item on a “how outrageous can you act” checklist.
