Food wastage is the worst thing that one can do, especially in the present scenario when people are dying of hunger. Food, and specially cooked food, has emotions and efforts attached to it. The idea of wasting cooked and served food can make any sane person feel embarrassed. Still, people waste food for no strong reasons. They find it pretty cool. This is really an irony. How can people be so callous? Why can’t they value the efforts behind the served meals?
And what for are they wasting food?
Weren’t they aware at the very first place while taking the food items, whether they would be able to consume or not, that particular dish or the quantity they have taken? Don’t they have the basic knowledge about their appetite, choice and capacity?… All these questions haunt me when I see people wasting food. I personally believe, that a person who wastes the food or leave it on the plate after taking is the one who has no regards for the humanitarian approach. You cant expect such a person to do anything great or bring about any positive change in the society. And you would find that, generally, these are the kind of people who always complain and crib about everything. I think wasting of food is related to the psychology of the person. It also denotes certain personality disorders to be specific.
Wastage of food is akin
This we can understand by an innuendo. Imagine that a tenant who can comfortably live in a three BHK House shifts to five BHK House, where he has to pay almost double of the house rent from his hard earned money. And then you visit him and realize that he hasn’t used the other two rooms at all and they are lying ideally in shabby condition since they haven’t been used and on top of that they need cleanliness and maintenance which will entail additional money from the pocket of this tenant who could have easily stayed in a smaller house, having saved a good amount of money. And then you advice him for revisiting his decision, but he doesn’t pay heed to your suggestion and continues to be in the same condition. Would you call him sane?…Well, I think most of us won’t do so. Wastage of food is akin to this.
Moreover, such habits get inculcated in folks right from their childhood
wherein either they would have been observing their parents and family members wasting the food items often after meals, or they wouldn’t have been counselled at home and in schools when they left the food in their plate or tiffin. Therefore, parents should ingrain this habit right from their childhood.
However, it’s not necessarily so that such a bad habit always gets developed in childhood only,
as there are many examples where people, despite coming from well cultured families tend to get inclined towards bad habits when they become independent. Hence, an initiative should be taken across all levels by the well wishers of such folks in a way that they won’t allow their children, family members, peers, colleagues and guests to waste food and would rather counsel them for getting rid of this bad habit. It is also imperative to understand that not everyone who wastes food is compulsorily an insane guy. But yes, he is definitely not doing anything good by practicing this wrong habit. We need to make them understand that the food can be well utilised to fill the empty tummies.
I am sure, if we take it as a campaign and decide to bring about the change in our mindset towards food wastage and value of every meal, we can certainly bring out a big and impactful change in the society, and going forward and can eradicate this evil in the near future. Let’s unite against the wastage of food. Let’s utilize the food in the most prudent manner so that the reduction in wastage becomes so phenomenal that it may be used for feeding the hungry lot.
