Recently the Zoom video conference services came under the scanner of Indian Government due to increasing security issues. The Cyber Coordination Centre (CCC) of the Ministry of Home Affairs has cautioned in a 16 page (PDF) advisory that Zoom is not a safe platform due to privacy threat and security alarm.
Zoom became the most downloaded app store past few weeks in India. In fact, the Indian Ministers too tweeted photos which revealed that they were using Zoom application for communication purpose during this lockdown.
Amid this pandemic zoom video conference became the commonly used app by government employees, school, private companies and many other millions of people who are confined at home and have no other way to communicate for work or leisure purpose. But there are many safety concerns linked with the app that lead to serious criticism and cyber danger at worldwide level.
The press bureau of India gave an official statement that government officers/officials won’t use the Zoom platform for official purpose. The guidelines were also mentioned for those who wish to use the Zoom meeting app for their personal communication by individuals or private units. The MHA has provided recommendations for those who want to use the application irrespective of the gaps and advised for security arrangement:
1.Put a new user ID and password for every meeting
2. Enable the waiting room feature in order to confirm that a participant can only enter the meeting only when the host leading the meeting permits to.
3. Disable “join before host”
4. Allow screen sharing by host only
5. Disable “allow removed participant to rejoin” feature
6. Restrict or inactivate file transfer option
7. Restraint the recording feature
8. Create a new meeting with randomly generated ID and password instead of fixed one
9. Don’t share the meeting id on any public platform. Generate a new meeting id and password for every new session, which makes it more secure
10. Lock the meeting once all participants have joined
11. If you are the administrator, put an end to the meeting and not just leave
These measures will keep the basic safety necessities intact and prevent the users from zoom-attackers. The steps were taken to safeguard that no unapproved entry of a person in the virtual meeting room and also to protect any person in the meeting to participate in any malevolent activities during the session. This also avoid DOS attack by limiting users through passwords and entree grant.
