June 14, 2024 saw the triumphant theatrical premiere of Maharaja, the much-anticipated film starring Vijay Sethupathi and directed by Nithilan Swaminathan of Kurangu Bommai fame.

Now the film is appearing on the top 10 chart following its distribution on Netflix. With Vijay Sethupathi playing his gritty, vintage character, the film is billed as a vicious action-thriller.

The story:

Maharaja(Vijay Sethupathi ) tells the story of a barber who owns a saloon business and resides with his daughter. His wife died in a horrific accident involving a negligent truck colliding with their home, leaving their daughter unharmed. Astonishingly on that tragic day, a metal waste bin saved the daughter’s life. Ever since, the trashcan has been treated like an idol by the father and daughter, who call it Lakshmi out of devotion.

Nevertheless, a group of thugs once ransacked their home and took the trash can when the child left for a sports camp in a different city. The father now has to locate the missing bin before his daughter returns from camp. We wonder who would steal the waste bin and whether there is a larger story behind all of this as he seeks the local police’s help in figuring out who took it. Why does Maharaja want Lakshmi back so badly?

The star cast:

A number of exceptionally talented performers play key parts in the movie. It is rare to encounter a character who doesn’t appear appropriate or unrealistic. Upon being cast in a role, every actor transforms into the character.

Great performances are given by Vijay Sethupathi as Maharaja, Anurag Kashyap as Selvam, Manikandan as Dhana, and Natty as Inspector Varadan. The actress who plays Selvam’s wife, Abhirami, is equally remarkable.

The way that Vijay Sethupathi plays the role of a loving father in the film is particularly noteworthy. It’s fascinating to see how, while keeping his innocence, he develops from a shy figure to someone with depths. It’s enjoyable to witness how his performance sets the tone for the emotional relationship he shares with his child.

When it comes to acting, Maharaja has brought out the best in Anurag Kashyap, and many are in awe of the ferocity with which he has embraced his part.

The Positive:

Watching Maharaja is enjoyable, especially the way Vijay Sethupathi was depicted as a hero for the first time since Merry Christmas, starring Katrina Kaif. His strong performance in the thrilling film steals the show and demonstrates how versatile actor he is. Anurag Kashyap and Natarajan Subramaniam, also known as Natty, shine with other gifted performers with their exceptional performances. Everyone is amazed by Natty’s final role-transformation from a typical cop to an intriguing figure, but Kashyap’s nasty portrayal left us wanting more.

We cannot ignore Nithilan Swaminathan’s writing and directing prowess when discussing the excellent elements of the movie. Using a fairly standard story that has been used by a number of directors before.

It’s also important to highlight actor Singampuli’s outstanding performance, which gives the narrative an additional emotional depth layer and is one of his best roles to date.

Technical side:

Regarding the film’s technical aspects, Philomin Raj’s skilful editing was a significant asset that contributed to its entertaining viewing. Raj, who is well-known for his brilliant performances in films like Kaithi, Master, and Vikram, demonstrated his skill once more by skilfully coordinating the script style with the narrative. Raj’s technical abilities helped to make the protagonist’s unreliable narration and surprising developments realistic, especially in the gripping second half.

Ajaneesh Loknath’s outstanding background score for the movie further enhances the situations with his skill. The picture makes for a great watch because of its raw, aggressive effect, which is further emphasised by the skilfully done action scenes and powerful soundtrack.

The opening part of the story is a masterwork of setting up tension. The stiff manner of Vijay Sethupathi’s portrayal makes him surprisingly interesting. His fascination with a dustbin is ridiculous, which is a brilliant move since it creates a sharp contrast to the sombre themes that surface later. The story takes a turn for the worst when Anurag Kashyap’s introduction ushers in a more nuanced and grim tone.

Remarkable climax:

Maharaja’s riveting finale is among its most talked-about features. The movie steadily intensifies until a stirring denouement that sticks in the minds of spectators. At the climax of the narrative, the emotional intensity increases, leading to a satisfying and thought-provoking end. The film’s final 20 minutes are especially gripping, full of turns that subvert viewer assumptions and compel further in-depth consideration of the issues that run throughout the story. This movie’s climactic scene not only lives up to the tension that has been building throughout, but it also offers a moving conclusion to the protagonist’s journey.

Is it worth watching?

Vijay Sethupathi’s film Maharaja, which has him in the lead character, is unquestionably designed for the big screen. The captivating and beautifully crafted action sequences, together with a lively soundtrack and outstanding acting, culminate in a delightful cinematic encounter in theatres.

Maharaja is an emotionally charged and exciting action movie that you should definitely watch.
