Jio Cinema’s Murder in Mahim series goes beyond standard crime dramas to explore a deeper level of raw honesty and contemplation. The eight-episode series, which is an adaptation of Jerry Pinto’s gripping novel, covers a wide range of topics, exploring not just the murky maze of criminality but also the complicated jargon of familial ties and societal injustices.

Murder in Mahim tracks the serial killings that take place in Mahin, Mumbai. In addition to being a murder mystery, the show does a great job of making social commentary on the difficulties that gay people in the modern world confront. The series, which is set in Mumbai in 2013, opens with the murder of a gay sex worker and the ensuing investigation that aims to apprehend the perpetrator.

Ashutosh Rana as Peter Fernandez, Vijay Raaz as Inspector Shivrajrao Jende, Shivaji Satam as Shivrajrao’s father, and Shivangi Raghuvanshi as Police Official Firdaus Rabbani are among the cast members. The series was produced by Tipping Films and Viacom 18 Studios.

Officer Shivajirao Jende (played by Vijay Raaz) discovers a Pandora’s box when a gay sex worker is brutally murdered in a public toilet at Mahim Station. Conversely, Ashutosh Rana’s Peter Fernandes, a retired TV journalist, believes his son Sunil (Rohan Verma) may be gay after witnessing him advocating for homosexual rights.

Murder in Mahim – What happens?

Laxman, alias Proxy, is the first victim of the Mahim serial murders. His murder initiates an investigation that proves far more intricate than Shivajirao Jende (Vijay Raaz) and Firdaus Rabbani (Shivani Raghuvanshi), the investigating officers, had imagined.

They uncover a large number of potential suspects, including the son of journalist Peter Fernandes (Ashutosh Rana), Sunil, and two police officers, Durra and Pagmat. It also comes to light that Shiva and Peter were close friends prior to Peter ruining their friendship by getting Shiva’s father suspended for taking bribes. The two used to collaborate on cases as a police-journalist team. When this case keeps getting out of hand, they realise it’s time to go over their past problems and get back to working together.

Review

This web series talks extremely profoundly about complex human relationships, sex, and human physical needs despite all the scripting errors and poor storytelling. The honey-trapping of members of the LGBTQ community is highlighted in this series. It’s acknowledged that the LGBTQ community hasn’t gained social acceptance and recognition despite the Supreme Court’s repeal of Section 377, but the same bigotry towards them isn’t as evident as it was in this series. Such people are all around us in practically every sector as we go about our daily lives. Stranger still is the way Peter and his wife Mili embrace Sunil’s homosexuality. Many questions regarding the police department are brought up by this series.

In the series Murder in Mahim, the police department is rife with corruption and motivated by a desire to make more money faster than everyone else, which leads to murders. However, the police agency doesn’t do anything about it because there are signs of widespread corruption.

Although there are a few minor plot errors and sporadic pace problems throughout the series, these are more than offset by the captivating writing and excellent acting. After the credits have rolled, “Murder in Mahim” will have you thinking about the complexities of human nature in addition to keeping you on the edge of your seat.
