“Shoot me a text” is quite common amongst Generation Z

Texting or using slangs has become a fashion statement, though voice calls aren’t in peril of going defunct but millennials regard it as invasive on many occasions, another reason can be lack of time. They have eschewed voice and drifted towards messaging. Texting is not just restricted to formal messages, but as people spend more time online, it predominantly influenced our day-to-day conversation.

The internet slang has altered the way people use dialogue which has been globally implemented. With the growing pace of revolution on the internet, people are embracing more new words than before. Texting has formed its own kind of language and grammar. Do you frequently use “Lol” or “Omg” or “Yolo”? Do they sound alien to you? It may sound alien to your parents, but not to the millennials. It is so extensively used in internet and text messages that people even use it often while communicating face to face.

Lol doesn’t literally mean “Laughing out loud” but it’s more like an expression used even when nothing is tenuously humorous.

It has accepted as something much elusive and urbane. Social media is flooded with “Lol” irrespective of the content which is bleakly amusing. For an example, I texted my friend during lockdown what are you doing? She replied, washing clothes followed by Lol. Therefore, there was no literal meaning of the same, instead Lol indicates basic compassion between the people who are texting each other, releasing stress, sarcasm and building a sense of likeness.

Texting also propagated the substituting of complete word with single letter like, “okay” became “k” and “why” became “y”.
