The Buckingham Murders on Netflix is a crime narrative that investigates a string of killings in Buckinghamshire. The film makes insightful observations about communalism, religious intolerance, and LGBTQ+ fear.

Investigative detective Jasmeet Bhamra, played by Kareena Kapoor Khan, is juggling personal pain while trying to piece together the details of a young boy’s murder in Buckinghamshire. As a determined investigator, Kapoor Khan gives her part a realistic seriousness by forgoing the glitz. Every time she appears on screen, the film is elevated by her unwavering dedication.

Story

Detective Jasmeet “Jazz” Bhamra is at the centre of the murder mystery. In the movie, Kareena plays this role. Following the death of her son at the hands of a deranged man, Jasmeet finds herself in a challenging stage of life. After this tragedy, she moves to a different town in Buckinghamshire in the hopes that it will help her recover.

She receives her first case in the new town, in which a Sikh youngster who went missing is discovered dead in a park in an abandoned car. Following an inquiry, it is discovered that the primary suspect is a young man named Saqib, who is the son of the deceased boy’s father’s former business partner. There is a witness that proves Saqib is the true murderer. But after spotting the falsehood, Jasmeet decides to uncover the truth.

What works for the movie “The Buckingham Murders”?

The Buckingham Murders, which takes place in Buckinghamshire, is a slow-burning mystery. To keep the attention on the matter at hand, Hansal, being the talented filmmaker that he is, ends the track about Jasmeet’s loss in the first five minutes.

The 2022 Leicester Hindu-Muslim rioting that followed the India-Pakistan Asia cricket cup is being investigated. Aseem Arrora, the writer, has the opportunity to create scenes and plot points that complement the tight situation. It’s refreshing that the movie isn’t overly didactic. The only conclusion is that “justice trumps religion.”

What doesn’t work for the movie “The Buckingham Murders”?

The film fails because it sacrifices the detective’s actual crime plot in order to make a satiric film on immigrants. Pretty quickly, the tension fades away. A lacklustre climax further drags down the plot, which isn’t as compelling or intense as one might anticipate. Despite Khan’s great performance, the film’s poor premise can only be saved to a certain extent.

Performances

Kareena appears to blend in well with both Indian and British performers in the movie, which will help you stay on top of the plot. Her involvement in The Buckingham Murders has been persuasively defended, as have those of other characters. Kareena has been flawlessly brought out in her avatar for the first time by director Hansal Mehta.

Daljeet Kohli, the father of the murdered child, is played by Ranveer Brar, who also makes it impossible to believe that this is his first movie. Keith Allen, a British actor, has merited his part and is worth seeing. Applause should also be given to Kapil Redekar for his portrayal of Saquib Chaudhary.

Direction

Director Hansal Mehta is renowned for his storytelling techniques and has produced several suspenseful films, including Shahid, Citylights, and Aligarh. In addition, the film highlights several societal topics, such as teen drug use, LGBTQ difficulties, and communal discord.

Every effort has been made by Hansal Mehta to depict the murder mystery in a realistic way. Additionally, the director’s approach was somewhat comparable to that of British filmmakers. Punjabi, Hindi, and English are mixed together, and British performers have been deftly chosen for the main parts. Additionally, the movie has a human angle that lends the narrative a poignant quality.

In the end

This is one that fans of Kareena Kapoor Khan won’t want to miss. The psychological aspects of The Buckingham Murders, along with Kapoor’s unvarnished portrayal, make the picture worth seeing even though it occasionally feels cliched. It’s a good addition to the crime thriller genre and ought to attract more viewers on over-the-top (OTT) platforms, where its personal story may be even more compelling. It’s a gripping, emotionally charged thriller, although it may have been much better with slightly more polished writing.

You will undoubtedly be on the edge of your seat as the Buckingham Murders narrative is revealed layer by layer. You’ll be impressed throughout by the performers’ performances and the film’s direction. On the other hand, the Buckingham Murders’ finale is a little weak; if it had been stronger, the movie would have earned four stars.
